Abstract

COVID-19 has severely impacted the world and has caused millions of deaths worldwide. The pandemic has the potential to severely impact the mental health of adolescents. Those who have tested positive may experience symptoms after their recovery, called Long COVID-19. The purpose of this study was to analyze Long COVID-19’s impact on adolescent mental health. The hypothesis is that Long COVID-19 symptoms have a detrimental impact on the mental health of adolescents. The null hypothesis is that there has been no impact on adolescent mental health. An electronic survey was sent with 13 stress-related questions and an informed consent. The responses were based on a Likert’s scale of 1 to 5, where 5 is the most positive impact and 1 is the most negative impact. Results were analyzed with standard statistical methods, and a p-value of ≤ 0.05 was considered significant. There was a total of 141 responses, and 59.3% of the respondents tested positive for COVID-19 and 40.7% did not. A t-test was run on the overall response between those who tested positive and had Long COVID-19 symptoms and with no symptoms, and p < 0.01, showing a significant difference between the responses of those who tested positive with Long COVID-19 symptoms and those who tested positive with no symptoms. More studies need to be conducted to accurately assess the impact of Long COVID-19 on adolescent mental health.

Lee Felker Conrad

With a passion for education that spans over 18 years, I have dedicated my career to teaching science and AP Capstone courses at Little Rock Central High School. During this time, I've had the privilege of mentoring numerous students through independent research projects, cultivating a deep-rooted love for scientific exploration and inquiry.

My involvement extends beyond the classroom as I actively participate in the boards of the Central Arkansas Regional Science and Engineering Fair and the Arkansas State Science and Engineering Fair. Moreover, I take immense pride in sponsoring the Science Olympiad team, which has achieved a remarkable 13-year reign as state champions.

Recognized for my commitment to education, I was honored with the 2020 Teacher Mentor Award from the Arkansas Soybean Science Challenge. This accolade, along with being named the Outstanding Coach for Science Olympiad in both 2014 and 2022, stands as a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm I bring to my role as an educator.

Throughout my career, I've guided and supported over 15 students in publishing their research findings under my tutelage. I consider this one of my most significant achievements, as it showcases not only their growth as budding scientists but also their development as writers, researchers, and compassionate individuals.

As I look ahead to the future, I'm excited about the prospect of continuing my work in secondary education, shaping the minds of the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and leaders. My academic journey includes a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Arkansas and a Master of Education in Secondary Education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

Outside of my teaching responsibilities, my heart belongs to my family. I cherish the moments spent with my husband and three children, particularly when we embark on adventures to explore the 52 state parks of Arkansas. Nature, to me, is not just a backdrop but a place where we learn and bond as a family.

In summary, my journey as an educator has been marked by dedication, achievements, and a deep-seated desire to nurture the next generation of scientists, thinkers, and explorers. I look forward to many more years of inspiring and shaping young minds in the field of science and beyond.
